Hollywood makes it look pretty straight-forward… Your waters break (usually in some kind of public place), you jump in the nearest taxi, scream “I HATE YOU” at your husband a few times and then push a perfect baby out of your hoo-ha…Unfortunately, in reality, this kind of birth is not always the way it goes.

Maybe you’ve planned the perfect calming playlist, created the perfect essential oil blend, and requested dim lighting once you arrive at the hospital…but then your blood pressure shoots unexpectedly high two weeks before your due date and they want to plan your c-section.

Maybe your baby does an unwanted flip in your belly, and you have no option but to go under the knife for a safe delivery.

Maybe you’ve had such bad trauma from a previous natural birth that the stress and anxiety that the thought of another natural birth brings to you has led you to book in an elective c-section.

Maybe the high-powered finance company you work at has convinced you that a c-section is the only way to go if you want to remain in control of your life and career.

Birth looks different for everyone.

At MothersBabies we want to empower you with knowledge to help your pregnancy and birth go the way you want it to. We want you to know your choices in relation to birthing your bub and to understand the implications of these choices. We want you to feel calm, in control and flexible if your birth plan changes, for whatever reason, and empowered to adapt your plans so that you remain confident that you are doing what is best for you and your baby.

Babies born via c-section have different gut microbiomes to those born vaginally. Science has shown that the way in which c-section babies’ immune systems develop is altered, and that these babies are more likely to develop allergies and asthma down the track.

But c-sections also save lives.

Module 6 ‘Knowledge is Power – Birth Mode’ will help you to unpick the complexities of what your birth mode can mean for you and the future health of your baby. This is not a black-and-white discussion, and we know it is a sensitive and emotional topic, but we strongly believe that knowledge is power, and we are here for you.

Knowledge about the impact of birth mode may help guide your choice between a vaginal birth or a c-section, if you are lucky enough to have a choice between the two… or, it may help to guide your decisions further down the track if you don’t get to choose your birth mode.

We want you to feel empowered in the lead up to your birth, to know your choices, and to understand the impact these decisions have on your baby.
