Breastfeeding and Baby Immunity
From the people who tell you to supplement with formula in case your supply isn’t enough for your baby to thrive, to the overly blunt ‘Breast is Best’ campaigns… From those who give you sideways glances when you’re breastfeeding in a cafe, all the way through to those who give you judgy looks at mothers’ group meetings when you announce you’ve given up breastfeeding at 2 months…Our society has very strong opinions about the way we feed our babies…
We, at MothersBabies, are not here to be judgy. In fact, being a science-driven charity takes any kind of ‘opinion’ out of the equation! We’re here for the science. And we’re here for you.
When you look at the data, breastmilk really is a kind of magical liquid. It supports your baby’s developing immune system in all the right ways and feeds their microbiome all the goodies it needs. If you can breastfeed, this is great news for you and your bub…but there are still some considerations for optimising your bub’s microbiome, all of which we delve into in our 7th module, ‘Breastfeeding and Baby Immunity’.
Discover what you should be eating to support your own gut microbiome and breastmilk, why we love Bifidobacterium so much, what HMOs are and why they are important to your baby’s gut, and the surprising links between BMI, breastfeeding and the gut microbiome.
We know that breastfeeding is not always possible for women for many different reasons. If this is you, you might be interested to learn more about the types of probiotics that can help to establish a healthy gut microbiome in your bub. We’ve also thrown in plenty of simple and helpful diet and lifestyle tips that have been shown to help improve the diversity and resilience of your gut microbiome…a win for everyone involved!
As always at MothersBabies, we believe that knowledge is power. Learning about the magic of breastmilk is powerful for all, because it can help guide your choices… Maybe this knowledge will encourage you to visit a lactation consultant if your baby isn’t latching properly, to investigate your baby’s tongue tie again, or to join an online breastfeeding support group. Or maybe we can help to encourage you to ask more questions about probiotic formulas to help to support your bub’s developing microbiome, or even adopt a dog (you’ll have to read the gut health tips to know why this is ;)…
