There are a variety of reasons people have C-sections…

We know that C-section babies have different gut microbiome compositions to vaginally born babies, and that this may alter their immune system development…

So, for those who are keen to support their bub’s microbiome development after a C-section, here are some ideas…

Breastfeed if possible.
We know that breastmilk is filled with all the beneficial, microbial goodness that will help support your baby’s microbiome development, so it’s well worth trying to breastfeed your newborn if you can,

Add a furry friend to your growing family
We’re aiming for microbial diversity for our babies, and you can be sure that hanging out with a dog or cat will deliver in that department!

Introduce a wide variety of plant foods once they start solids
Diet has a major impact on the gut microbiome, and represents a great opportunity to build diversity and support your baby’s developing immune system.

Don’t over-sterilise
In a post-pandemic world, we’re all very familiar with anti-bacterial and antiseptic products, but don’t be tempted to use these on your baby’s dummies or surfaces they’ll be eating from…Remember, not all bacteria is bad so we don’t need to aim for 100% elimination!
